Wall Plastering in West Bridgford and Nottingham
Wall plastering looks like one job and is really two. There is the finish everybody sees, and there is the background it has to hold onto, and the background is where the decisions get made. Every wall pulls water out of fresh plaster at its own rate. That pull is called suction. It governs how fast the material goes off, how long we have to work it flat, and whether the surface is still sound in five years.
We meet four backgrounds regularly here and they behave nothing like each other. Old handmade brick can be thirsty enough to drag a coat dry before it is laid off. An old lime plastered wall is softer and more forgiving but resents a hard modern coat forced onto it. Dense blockwork can be so low in suction that plaster slides rather than grips. Plasterboard wants a thin skim and nothing heavier. Two walls in one room are often not the same wall, so we test rather than assume.
What that test decides is the backing coat, and the backing coat decides the job. Bonding, browning and a lime based backing exist because different backgrounds need different things, and reaching for whichever one is on the van is the most common reason a wall fails early. We will tell you which your walls want, and if something needs sorting before any plaster goes near them, we will say so. Coming out to look costs nothing.

Solid Wall Or Cavity: The Line That Runs Through West Bridgford
A large part of West Bridgford went up between the 1880s and the 1930s, and somewhere in the middle of that run the way houses were built changed. Before it, external walls were solid brick: one thickness of masonry holding the house up and keeping the weather out at once. From the 1920s and 1930s onwards cavity construction became normal, two leaves with a gap between them. That transition is the practical dividing line here. If your house sits on the older side of it, the external walls are almost certainly solid.
A solid wall gets wet in driving rain and dries back out through the same face. It is meant to breathe. Gypsum is not breathable in that sense; it sets hard and seals, which is right on plasterboard or a dry partition and wrong on a solid wall with moisture still moving through it. Skim gypsum onto that wall and the damp does not disappear. It travels sideways and upward and reappears through the new plaster as a tide mark or a hollow patch, often inside one heating season. Where a wall needs to breathe, a lime based backing and finish is the right build up, and we would rather price that than visit twice.
The later stock is a different conversation. Cavity blockwork and post war plasterboard partitions are dry, stable and predictable, and take a modern gypsum system without any of that argument, which is why one specification works on one street and fails on another. Internal plastering on an ordinary unlisted house is maintenance, so permissions rarely come into it. It is only worth remembering that West Bridgford falls under Rushcliffe Borough Council, not Nottingham City, if your property is listed or the work will change the outside of the building.
- Pre-1920s West Bridgford stock is usually solid brick
- Suction should choose the backing coat, not habit
- Gypsum seals a wall, a lime build up lets it breathe
- Plasterboard takes a skim, never a heavy backing

Nice friendly service and a great quality job. I thought I’d need to wait weeks for a plasterer but Aron managed to fit my skim job in the very next day. Can’t fault that.Posted on Google![]()

How We Work Out What Your Walls Need
Reading The Background
Before anything is mixed we find out what we are plastering onto. Splashing clean water on a bare wall tells us a lot: soak straight in and the suction is high, sit there as beads and it is low or the wall has been sealed. We also tap for hollow areas and check the wall is dry.
Choosing The Backing Coat
Browning suits an absorbent background such as older brickwork. Bonding is for low suction surfaces browning will not stick to reliably, like dense block or a painted wall. A lime based backing goes on solid walls that need to stay vapour open. All three flatten a wall, but they are not interchangeable, and the wrong one cracks.
Skim, Trowel And Finish
The finish goes on in two thin coats and is worked at the right moment as it sets, which decides whether the wall is genuinely flat or merely smooth. We bead external corners so they stay sharp, cut in neatly around sockets and reveals, and leave a surface that wants only a mist coat.

Some Of Our Wall Plastering Work
Frequently Asked Questions
The age of the house is the quickest guide. Built before the 1920s and the walls are most likely solid brick; from the 1930s onwards they are probably cavity. A window reveal gives a second clue, because a solid wall is usually noticeably thinner through the opening. We check properly when we come out, since it changes what goes on the wall.
To control suction. A very absorbent wall pulls water out of the plaster faster than we can work it, leaving a weak, dusty surface that never bonds. Damping down or a bonding agent evens that out. On a low suction wall the problem is the opposite, so it gets a key instead. Same aim either way: a background the plaster can grip at a sensible speed.
Both are backing coats and both get ruled off flat, but they are made for opposite backgrounds. Browning wants suction and works well on older absorbent brickwork. Bonding is for surfaces offering little or none, such as dense block, engineering brick or painted walls. Browning on a low suction wall is a common shortcut, and it is why some walls sound hollow a year later.
Often yes, provided the existing surface is sound, dry and reasonably flat. We tap the whole wall first, because anything hollow has to come off rather than be buried. Old painted or distempered surfaces need preparing so the skim can bond. If most of the wall has let go, taking it back is cheaper over time.
We would rather not, and we will say so. Plastering over active damp hides it for a few months and then the new work fails too. Find the cause first, whether that is a gutter, the pointing, a leak or ground levels. On a solid brick wall we would then use a breathable build up rather than sealing it with gypsum.
No. We come and look at the actual walls, tell you what they are, and give you a no obligation price. Walls are hard to quote from a photograph, because the background sets the price and a picture does not show it.

Hacking off old plaster is the dusty part. The plastering itself is wet work and makes far less airborne dust than people expect. We sheet the floors and anything left in the room, keep doors shut, and take the waste away with us.
Not until they have dried right through and the colour has gone even across the whole wall, which is what you watch for rather than a set number of days. Thickness, room temperature and season all change it, so allow longer in winter. Start with a watered down mist coat, because full strength emulsion on new plaster tends to peel.
No. We work room by room so you keep the rest of the house in use. The room being plastered needs clearing as far as possible and is out of action while it dries, which is worth planning around if it is a kitchen or the only bathroom.
