Plaster Repairs in West Bridgford and Nottingham
Most plaster repair jobs in West Bridgford start the same way: a hairline crack that has slowly opened up, a patch of ceiling that sounds hollow when you tap it, or a corner that keeps cracking however many times it gets filled. We repair rather than replace wherever the existing plaster will take it, because on an older house a sound original ceiling is worth keeping.
The first thing worth knowing is what is behind the surface, because it changes the whole job. In a house built before roughly 1940 you are usually looking at timber laths with a lime-based plaster pushed through them, and the failure is nearly always the plaster losing its grip on the laths rather than the plaster itself being bad. In anything newer it is normally plasterboard, and the failure is usually a joint, a fixing, or movement in the stud behind it. Neither is difficult, but they need different repairs, and a repair that ignores the difference tends to come back.
We work across West Bridgford and the surrounding Nottingham area, and we will tell you honestly when a patch will hold and when a ceiling is far enough gone that overboarding or a full re-skim is the cheaper answer over five years. There is no charge for coming out to look.

What West Bridgford Houses Throw At Us
A great deal of West Bridgford's housing stock went up between the 1880s and the 1930s, and that single fact decides most plaster repairs here. Houses from that period were built with timber lath and lime plaster on ceilings and stud partitions, and with solid brick external walls rather than the cavity walls that became normal from the 1920s and 1930s onwards. Solid walls carry moisture differently, so a repair that would be perfectly sound in a 1970s semi can fail within a year on an Edwardian villa if the wrong material goes on.
That leads to the judgement call we make on almost every older property: gypsum plaster sets hard and seals a surface, which is exactly what you want on plasterboard and exactly what you do not want on a damp solid wall, because the moisture has nowhere to go and simply reappears higher up. Lime is vapour open and lets a wall breathe. If your walls are solid brick and there is any sign of dampness, we will say so and price the breathable option, even where it is the slower job.
Two local details are worth checking before you commit to anything beyond a like-for-like repair. West Bridgford sits in the borough of Rushcliffe, so planning and building control questions go to Rushcliffe Borough Council and not to Nottingham City Council, which is where a lot of homeowners look first and get the wrong guidance. And if your property sits inside one of Rushcliffe's designated conservation areas, or is listed, the rules on what you can change tighten considerably. Internal repairs on an unlisted house are almost never an issue, but it is worth knowing which side of the line you are on before anyone starts.
- Pre-1940s stock: expect lath and lime, not plasterboard
- Solid brick walls need a breathable repair, not a sealed one
- Planning and building control go to Rushcliffe Borough Council
- Check conservation area status before any external change

The ATS plasterer was quick friendly and very efficient. The job was done within a few days after my first call. Good communication with Aron. A fair price too. I'll be hiring him again soon to sort out the shower room.Posted on Google![]()

Aron and his team did an excellent job of removing the 1960s tiles on the front of our house and replaced them with rendering. Very professional and reliable. Made the house much more up to date.Posted on Google![]()

Nice friendly service and a great quality job. I thought I’d need to wait weeks for a plasterer but Aron managed to fit my skim job in the very next day. Can’t fault that.Posted on Google![]()

Re-skimming and overboarding ceilings where cracking has gone beyond a localised repair.

The Repairs We Are Called Out For Most
Cracked Ceilings
Long straight cracks usually follow a joist or a board joint and are cosmetic. Cracks that branch, or a ceiling that sags and sounds hollow, mean the plaster has parted from the laths above it. We check the whole ceiling by tapping it before quoting, because the answer is either a small stitched repair or overboarding the lot, and the two are very different prices.
Blown And Hollow Patches
A patch that sounds hollow has lost its bond with the wall behind. Filling it does nothing, because the fill has nothing to hold onto. We cut back to sound plaster, work out why the bond went, and build the patch back up in coats so it sits flush with the surrounding wall rather than leaving a visible ghost after painting.
Corners, Reveals And Damage
Doorways, window reveals and external corners take the most knocks, and on older houses the original corner has often been rounded rather than sharp. We can match either. Damage from a leak, a removed radiator or a rewire gets made good the same way, and we will always tell you if the cause needs sorting first.

Some Of Our Plaster Repair Work
Frequently Asked Questions
Tap the surface either side of the crack with your knuckle. A solid, dull sound means the plaster is still bonded and the crack is almost always cosmetic. A hollow, drummy sound means the plaster has come away behind and filling it will not last. If the crack has opened up over months, or runs diagonally from a corner, it is worth us having a look.
It very often can be repaired. If most of the ceiling still sounds solid and only a section has let go, we can cut back to sound material and rebuild that area. Where a large proportion is loose, overboarding the whole ceiling and skimming it is usually less disruptive and no dearer than repeated patch repairs.
On a wall you are going to repaint fully, yes, that is the standard we work to. If you want us to blend into an existing painted surface without redecorating the whole wall, be aware that a perfect match is difficult because the old paint has aged. We will tell you honestly before we start which of the two you are looking at.
Not until the cause is dealt with. Replastering over active damp hides it for a few months and then the new plaster fails too. On the solid brick walls common in older West Bridgford houses we would look at where the moisture is coming from first, then use a breathable repair rather than a sealing gypsum one.
For an ordinary unlisted house, no. Like-for-like internal repair is maintenance. It changes if the building is listed or you are altering something structural, and West Bridgford sits in Rushcliffe, so any query goes to Rushcliffe Borough Council rather than Nottingham City Council. We are happy to point you in the right direction.
Yes. We come out, look at the actual surface, and give you a no obligation quote for the work. Plaster repairs in particular are very hard to price over the phone, because what is behind the surface decides the job.
We are based in West Bridgford and work across the surrounding Nottingham area. If you are not sure whether you are in range, give us a call and we will tell you straight away.
Less than people expect if the room is prepared properly. We sheet up floors and anything left in the room, and cutting out old plaster is the dusty part rather than the plastering itself. We clear up and take the waste with us.
New plaster needs to dry fully before paint goes on, and that depends on the thickness, the room and the time of year. As a rule of thumb allow several days for a small patch and longer for a full ceiling. A mist coat of watered down emulsion first will always give you a better finish than going straight in with full strength paint.
For a repair, almost never. We can usually work room by room so you keep the rest of the house. For a full ceiling it helps if the room can be cleared, but you can carry on living in the property.
