Cement Rendering in West Bridgford and Nottingham

Render fails in two ways and they look nothing like each other. Either it cracks, or it quietly lets go of the brick behind it and eventually comes away in sheets. Around West Bridgford the second one turns up far more often than people expect, and by the time a panel drops off the cause has usually been sitting there for several years. Sand and cement is still the right material for a great many walls here. It only becomes the wrong material when it goes on a wall that cannot live with it.

What decides that is the background. A solid brick wall, which is what most of the older stock here is built from, handles rain by taking some of it into the outer face and giving it back to the air once the weather turns. There is no cavity for water to cross. Seal that face with a dense, strong cement render and you have closed off the route the wall was drying through. Where water is still finding a way in somewhere else, a blocked gutter, a cracked sill, an open joint above a bay, it now has one direction left, which is inwards.

So we look at the building before we talk about finishes. Where sand and cement suits the wall we will use it and it will hold. Where the wall wants something vapour open, or where a through-coloured system you never have to paint would serve you better, we will say so and explain why. Coming out to look costs nothing.

Solid Walls, Cavity Walls And The Line Between Them

There is a rough dividing line running through West Bridgford's houses and it falls somewhere in the 1920s and 1930s. Before it, external walls were normally solid brick with the bricks bonded right through. After it, cavity construction became the standard, two skins with a gap between. You cannot always tell from the pavement, but a window reveal that reads thin and a bond that shows header bricks along the face rather than stretchers all the way are both worth a second look.

It matters for rendering because of mix strength. A render should never be stronger than what it is stuck to. On modern blockwork a firmer mix is fine, because the block takes the stress when the render moves. On soft old brick a strong mix wins that argument, and when it shrinks it either cracks or pulls the face off the bricks with it. On solid wall properties we mix weaker and build up in coats, and we would rather explain that at the quote stage than have you weigh our spec against somebody offering one hard coat of a strong mix.

Then there is what you are permitted to do. Rendering changes the outside of a building, which puts it in a different bracket from anything internal. If your property is listed, or sits inside one of Rushcliffe's designated conservation areas, the position tightens and consent may be needed before an external finish changes. Planning and building control for West Bridgford is handled by Rushcliffe Borough Council rather than Nottingham City Council. It is a short check and it belongs at the start, not after the scaffold is up.

  • Solid brick before the 1920s, cavity after: it changes the spec
  • The render mix must be weaker than the brick it is bonding to
  • Drummy patches mean the bond has gone, not that filler is needed
  • Listed or conservation area work gets checked with Rushcliffe first

The ATS plasterer was quick friendly and very efficient. The job was done within a few days after my first call. Good communication with Aron. A fair price too. I'll be hiring him again soon to sort out the shower room.

Aron and his team did an excellent job of removing the 1960s tiles on the front of our house and replaced them with rendering. Very professional and reliable. Made the house much more up to date.

Nice friendly service and a great quality job. I thought I’d need to wait weeks for a plasterer but Aron managed to fit my skim job in the very next day. Can’t fault that.

Rendering

The full exterior rendering side of what we do, across West Bridgford and the wider Nottingham area.

Monocouche Rendering

A one-pass through-coloured render for anyone who would rather not repaint a wall again.

Reading A Render Before Anything Comes Off

Sounding The Existing Render

We go over the elevation with a knuckle or a tool handle and listen. Bonded render answers with a flat, dead knock. Where it has parted from the brick it answers hollow, and those drummy areas are usually wider than the damage you can see. Cracks leaving a dirty stain down the wall below are taking water in behind, so we treat them as bond failure until proven otherwise.

What Makes A Render Crack

Four things account for nearly all of it. Movement in the building, which shows as a crack that runs on a line and often reopens. A background the render was never going to hold to, such as paint or a patchwork of materials. A mix too strong for the brick beneath it, which cracks in a fine map across the panel. And rendering in the wrong weather, because frost and hard sun both wreck the cure before it has any strength.

Coats, Beads And Timing

Sand and cement goes on in coats, each one no stronger than the one under it, with the first scratched to key the next. Bell drips throw water clear at the base instead of letting it track back onto the brick, and stop beads keep the edges clean at openings. Then it is left to cure at its own pace. Rushing the second coat onto a green first coat is one of the commonest reasons a render cracks early.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tap it. Render still bonded to the brick gives a solid, dull knock. Where it has lost its grip the sound goes hollow and boxy, and that area is nearly always bigger than it looks. A crack with a dirty streak washing down the wall below it is another sign, because water is getting behind the render rather than running off it.

It can, and it is the main thing we look at here. A solid wall dries through its outer face. A dense cement render seals that face, so moisture already getting in has nowhere to go and shows up inside or pushes the render off. On those walls we either use a weaker breathable specification or advise against sand and cement altogether.

Usually one of four causes: structural movement, a background the render could not bond to, a mix too strong for the brick behind it, or application in frost or hard sun. Movement needs sorting first. The other three come down to specification and timing, which is the part we control.

It depends how much of it sounds hollow. An isolated blown panel on an otherwise sound elevation can be cut back and rebuilt. Where the drumminess runs across most of a wall, patching only moves the problem along and stripping that elevation back to brick works out better. We sound it first and tell you which you have.

Lime suits a wall that has to stay vapour open, typically solid brick with a history of damp. Monocouche suits anyone who does not want to repaint, since the colour runs through it. Sand and cement remains the sensible option on a sound background where you want a painted finish.

Yes. We come out, sound the existing wall and give you a no obligation price. Rendering is hard to quote from a phone description, because the preparation hiding under the surface is most of the cost.

West Bridgford is where we are based and we cover the surrounding Nottingham area from here. If you are not certain your address is in reach, ring and ask and you will get a straight answer.

There is scaffold up for the duration, and the noisiest, dirtiest stage is hacking off old render. Paths, windows and anything planted close to the wall get sheeted before that starts. We clear as we go and take the waste away with us.

Longer than most people allow. Sand and cement carries a lot of water and stays alkaline while it cures, so paint put on too soon can burn off or peel. Several weeks of dry weather is a fair expectation, and a breathable masonry paint beats anything that seals the surface.

No. It is all outside work, so the house stays usable throughout. Keep the windows shut on whichever elevation is being worked on, and expect access around the property to be tighter while the scaffold is standing.
