Wall Dry Lining in West Bridgford and Nottingham

Dry lining a wall means fixing plasterboard to it and skimming the boards, instead of floating wet plaster straight onto brick or block. It is quicker, it puts far less water into the house, and on a wall that is out of plumb or badly patched it gets you a flat surface without building everything back up in sand and cement. There are two ways of getting board onto a wall, and the difference between them is most of the job.

The first is dot and dab. Blobs of adhesive go on, the board is pushed against the wall and levelled, and the room is boarded in a day. The second is mechanical fixing, where timber battens or a metal frame are screwed to the wall and the board is screwed to that. Dabs are faster and take less off the room. A frame costs more and gives up more floor space, but it lets you decide what happens in the gap behind the board.

Which one you want is not really a preference. It is decided by the wall behind, and on a good deal of West Bridgford housing the answer is not the one people expect. We look at the wall before we price anything, tell you which system it wants and why, then quote for that. The visit costs you nothing.

Solid Walls, Sealed Voids And Why We Check First

A large part of West Bridgford was built between the 1880s and the 1930s, and the older end of that is solid brick with no cavity. A solid wall is not waterproof and was never meant to be. It takes up moisture in bad weather and gives it back when the weather turns. Dab plasterboard onto it and you have sealed an unventilated void tight against a wall that is still carrying that moisture. If the wall is bone dry it does no harm. If it is not, the damp shows as staining through the board, soft edges near the skirting, or growth in a gap nobody sees until the board comes off.

So we check for damp before agreeing to board anything, and we establish whether the wall is solid or cavity rather than guessing from the age of the street. Where a wall is solid and there is any doubt, we would rather batten or frame it and detail the space behind the board so it can breathe or drain. That is the slower and dearer option and we say so plainly. On the post-war and modern estates around Nottingham, with cavity construction and dense blockwork inside, the worry goes away and dot and dab is the correct answer. We are not against dabs. We are against using them on a wall that has told us not to.

Two other things pull the decision either way. How flat the wall is matters, because battens can be packed out to a true line where dabs only absorb so much error before a board bows. And if you are insulating as well as lining, insulated board or a frame with insulation between it changes the build-up entirely. Internal dry lining rarely involves permission, the exception being a listed building, and West Bridgford sits in Rushcliffe, so that question goes to Rushcliffe Borough Council.

  • Solid brick behind the board changes the whole method
  • We check the wall for damp before anything gets boarded
  • Modern cavity and blockwork walls take dot and dab fine
  • Battens can be packed to line a wall that is out of plumb

The ATS plasterer was quick friendly and very efficient. The job was done within a few days after my first call. Good communication with Aron. A fair price too. I'll be hiring him again soon to sort out the shower room.

Aron and his team did an excellent job of removing the 1960s tiles on the front of our house and replaced them with rendering. Very professional and reliable. Made the house much more up to date.

Nice friendly service and a great quality job. I thought I’d need to wait weeks for a plasterer but Aron managed to fit my skim job in the very next day. Can’t fault that.

What Lining A Wall Actually Involves

Plasterboard being fixed to a wall before skimming in West Bridgford

Dabs Or A Fixed Frame

The wall decides. Solid brick, any trace of damp, or a face well out of plumb all point towards battens or a metal frame. Sound, dry blockwork on a cavity wall takes dabs without argument. We measure how far out of true the wall runs as well, because a frame can be packed to a straight line while adhesive only takes up so much before the joints step.

Skirtings, Sockets And Pipework

Boarding moves the finished face of the wall into the room, typically around 30mm once board and adhesive are allowed for, and more with battens or insulation. Skirtings and architraves come off and go back on the new face. Sockets and switches want their back boxes bringing forward rather than buried. Radiator brackets, pipe tails and window reveals get worked out before we board.

Noggins Before The Boards Go On

Once a board is up there is nothing behind it but air. A television bracket, a wall hung radiator, a heavy mirror or kitchen wall units need solid timber behind the plasterboard at that exact spot, and the moment to put it there is before boarding. Tell us where things are going and we fit noggins and pattresses to suit. Fixings taken into bare board are how brackets pull out of a wall.

Some Of Our Wall Dry Lining Work

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on what is behind the board. Dry blockwork on a cavity wall is fine dabbed, and that is what most modern houses get. Solid brick, any history of damp, or a wall badly out of plumb is better on battens or a metal frame, because you keep control of the gap behind the board. We will tell you which yours is.

Not until the cause is sorted. Boarding over active damp hides it rather than fixes it, and dabs make it worse, because the moisture then sits in a sealed void with no way out. Once the source is dealt with we would line that wall on a frame, so there is a proper space behind the board.

Less than most people fear. Dabbed board takes roughly 30mm off each wall you line once the adhesive is counted, and battens or insulated systems take more. In a small room it is worth measuring against your furniture first, and we can walk round with a tape and show you where the new face will sit.

Yes, as long as we know beforehand. Noggins or a timber pattress go in behind the plasterboard at the fixing points while the wall is open, so the bracket screws into wood rather than board and air. If the boards are already up it can still be done, but it means cutting them back and making good after.

It can do both, but only if it is specified for it. Plain board on dabs makes very little difference. Insulated plasterboard, or a frame with insulation between the battens, genuinely helps on a cold solid wall. For sound, a frame with mineral wool behind it does far more than board fixed hard to the brick.

Neither is better in general, they suit different walls. Dry lining is quicker, puts less moisture into the property and hides an uneven wall well. Wet plastering keeps the room its full size and works on solid walls without creating a void. On a solid wall that is sound and dry, plaster is often the better answer, and we will say so.

Yes, with no obligation. For dry lining it is worth us seeing the walls, because whether they are solid or cavity, how flat they run and whether they are dry all change the method and the price. A quote given down the phone would be a guess.

West Bridgford is home, and we work out across the wider Nottingham area from here. Ring us with your postcode and we will tell you straight away whether you are in range.

Less than replastering, because no wet muck goes onto the wall itself. There is dust from cutting boards, so the room wants clearing or sheeting up, and skirtings and sockets are off while we work. Offcuts and packaging leave with us.

You do not need to move out. We work a room at a time so the rest of the house stays usable. The skim over boards dries quicker than a full wet plaster job because the board is not soaked through, but still allow a few days and put a mist coat of watered down emulsion on first.
